The building sector represents one of the largest opportunities for energy savings and decarbonization. As buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global CO2 emissions, we have an unprecedented opportunity to enable regenerative buildings and create sustainable working environments.

Industry experts and thought leaders Stefan Schwab, CEO of Comfy | Enlighted, Ryan Anderson from MillerKnoll, VP Global Research and Insights, and Dr. Cristina Banks, Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Healthy Workplaces at UC Berkeley teamed-up for the latest episode of the Urban Café to discuss how human-centric design can be used to create both better workspaces and decarbonize our buildings.

Here’s what they had to say about implementing successful workplace strategies to create lasting change:

  1. Creating sustainable spaces starts with understanding how a space can best support the activities and experiences of people in it.
  2. Having an adaptive re-use approach when it comes to reducing carbon emissions in buildings is better than removing a building completely.
  3. Data points and detailed insights in lighting, HVAC, and building operations help inform how to better optimize spaces and maximize energy cost savings.
